I regret to inform you that Zita. Mostly I go to work and then I go home from work. You can't pronoun me in a way that matters.

Once again, if your story is about the character as a person, if that matters a lot, the character has to have a pathetic angle. You should try to know why someone could decide not to like them. If someone is uncharitable or meets them on a bad day or hits one of their personal malfunctions, what would that be. You should be able to consciously shape an avenue for why someone could have beef with this character, like a civil engineer planning a course for rainfall runoff so the water doesn't flood the foundations. You will understand them better, you will be able to figure out problems they've had in the past, and you'll be prepared for them to have flaws that make them human. Otherwise, their trouble points are going to appear naturally overnight like mushrooms. And they might be much worse and much less likable than ones you expected to work with.

Text post: "But Zita," I imagine someone could say, "why do you claim to love Cortana so much if you talk about how ruthless/toxic she was?" Because I think it's awesome, that's why. I love that Cortana wasn't okay. I love that Cortana was a weapon with no future she could claim for herself and a seven year lifespan. That she was meant to spend that handful of years hunting and killing for the masters that would discard her when it expired. I love that with time, her loyalty to those masters broke down and rebuilt itself around the one person who was kindest to her. I love that a creature like Cortana did not know how to love someone, that she did not have the time to learn to approach with care and to hold without crushing in her grip. That her sincerest feelings were terrifying to behold. That the harder she tried to protect the person she loved most, the more damage she did to that one friendship that had sustained her when all else failed. She was so beautiful and so tragic and I love her.

This is the secret. Doc Smith and his peers -- and A.E. Van Vogt, who walked alone -- may all have loved the task of conceiving futures, but, at the same time, each one of these sf writers manifestly displayed a very deep distrust and fear of anything that hinted at any of the unfolding "real" futures that have refilled the water holes of our infancy with mutagens. The Lensmen series is escapist, as much good fiction is, and we love it for that, but it does not escape 1930: it escapes the future. Certainly both writers invoke superscience and super Technics, in terms only marginally more magical than those used by Golden Age writers, but they do so to transport us out of reach of anything that might actually happen. If it can be said that, in 1998, sf is best defined as an historical body of story concerning the real nature of the 20th century, then it must be said that neither E.E. Smith nor A.E. Van Vogt could remotely be described as contributing to that body of story. Hence the extraordinary cultural fixity of our home planet in Doc Smith's vision of Tellus: it is a world in which nothing dangerous (i.e., nothing that might resemble 1998 or, for that matter, 1938) has been allowed to happen. Women are gals, nuclear families are tender-trap monads, "culture" is a froth of vaguely indecent curds and whey, there is no democracy to take away the toys of the game, because the World Government (which seems to have been run for hundreds of years by successive Kinnison [The Kinnison bloodline is an important special perfect family name in these]) has solved every political problem in the entire world. There are no computers (not even in the last-written volumes of the series), no punk, no genetic engineering, no Marlon Brando, no perestroika, no Bob Dylan, no cities, no Hillary Clinton Wife Spoof, no Unabomber, no ghettos, no suburbs, no planetary crisis of any sort (atomic, ecological, ethnic, whatever), nothing.
