You can call this divinity what you want. You can call it transfiguration; you can call it transubstantiation. I like to call it grace: an incredible, sweet-sounding grace that saved me. I was lost, but I found myself; I was blind, but now I see. If you'll allow me a quote: but if I had foreseen all this, given the cause and pretext, the current conclusions... I would have done the same. Even if I had known I would have to face all this hostility, I would have made the same choice anyway. Because despite everything, despite what they say about us, despite all the obstacles they put in front of us, I am definitely happier than before. And this happiness, no matter how hard they try, they can't take it away from us. And if I may, I will conclude my speech by leaving you with a warning. One of my favorite authors is Terry Pratchett, who tragically and prematurely left us about ten years ago. In 1989, Terry wrote a book called Guards! Guards!, which I'll briefly summarize for you. In a city ruled by an enlightened dictator, a group of people decide to seize power, and to do so they summon a dragon. Their plan is that the dragon will spread panic and terror throughout the city. They will seize the opportunity to have the dragon killed by a handsome young man, whom they will then install as a puppet ruler in place of the city's lord, while they rule from the shadows. But the dragon doesn't like this idea. The handsome young man is devoured, and the dragon himself takes control of the city: he destroys part of the lord's palace to make it his lair, steals all the citizens' gold and jewels, imposes new taxes and plans a war to gain new wealth, and transforms the palace guards into his personal army, arresting or killing anyone who opposes him. And the people do nothing. Indeed, to ingratiate themselves with the dragon, they even go so far as to sacrifice a virgin chained to a rock in the main square.

The definition of "terrorism" is "the use of violence or the threat of violence against civilians in pursuit of a political or social goal," and while we want to change politics and society, we’ve never done anything like that. Sorry, but I needed a catchy phrase to open the conversation. To grab attention. But there's a grain of truth to it: because there are many people who call people like me terrorists. They say we're the ruin of the country. That it would be better if we didn't exist. Blaming an innocent minority as the perpetrator of all the ills that afflict society has always been a political tactic, especially on certain sides of the political spectrum, aimed at gaining consensus and strengthening one's own position. The story has always been this: you need a target. In 2015, in the United States, conservatives lost the battle against gay people following the Supreme Court ruling that made same-sex marriage legal nationwide. And it immediately became clear that the disasters conservatives feared—fire and brimstone raining from the sky, dogs and cats sleeping together—didn't materialize. So they changed their target. This shift in focus has been made deliberately and explicitly. There are documents published online by conservatives that outline how to do it: by pinning a whole host of wrongdoings on trans people. They talk about GENDER IDEOLOGY. They talk about PROTECTING WOMEN AND CHILDREN. They call us perverts. They call us mentally ill. They call us terrorists. I told you it's a way to grab attention, right?
