It is with a degree of contrition that I must own that I have denied myself the joy of reading #Dickens for longer than I care to admit. Yet upon completion of the novel Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, I at once picked up a copy of David Copperfield, and now bask in delight within its pages.

I love Dickens although his world-building can sometimes be loooooong. I reckon the first 200 pages of Bleak House were just setting the scene, but once I got through that, it was a cracking read and still so very relevant to our world today.

In composing the above, I became painfully aware that the medium of Bluesky, or indeed any forum similarly restricted to an inflexible character count, would have been abhorrent to any writer used to the more expansive modes of expression favoured during the period of Queen Victoria’s sovereignty.

Correct language for the contrite enlightened. It is his exactitude, insight and clarity that shine out once we get over our own perceptions of density. PS I've lain on the very couch where this scrivener drew his last (and no, it wasn't a cock and balls).
