2023 rewatch #741: The Apartment (1960) Ending-wise, I couldn't ask for better, both movie-wise and year-wise.

Keeping track of my movies watched for the year
2023 rewatch #740: Phantom Thread (2017) This was the first movie I watched this year to start this project, so it’s fitting that I end the year on the big screen with the perfect romantic tale of a fussy, hungry boy who just needed a Mommy Domme.
2023 watch #739: After the Thin Man (1936) A New Year's Eve movie, and didn't even know it going in. Nick and Nora are absolutely my favorite on-screen couple, and it's going to be hard to unseat them. "Whaddaya mean illiterate? My parents were married right here at City Hall!"
2023 watch #738: Michael Clayton (2007) RIP Tom Wilkinson. Absolutely stole the show.
2023 watch #737: Anyone But You (2023) After that first trailer, I had super low expectations, and was surprised by a sweet, charming, and very hilarious adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing. Top tier Billy Shakes.
2023 rewatch #736: Heat (1995) First time on the big screen, and it’s even more impressive. Still can’t go 5 minutes without remembering “oh shit, he’s in it?“ "When I think of asses, a woman's ass, something comes out of me." Same, Vincent.
2023 rewatch #735: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) The movie that made me want to get into animation as a kid, first time in the theater. It’s impossible to hear Heigh-Ho without singing it like a gremlin.
2023 rewatch #734: Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994) Better Oscar ceremony than the Will Smith slap. Aged poorly with the transphobia, as if it wouldn't have made Anna Nicole Smith hotter. "Cheer up, Ed. This is not goodbye. It's just I won't ever see you again."
2023 rewatch #733: The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991) "I want a world where I can eat a sea otter without getting sick! I want a world where the Democrats will put somebody up there worth voting for!" Eight elections later, keep waiting.
2023 rewatch #732: The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988) Shaking my head through all the OJ scenes so the spider up in the corner of my living room knows I don't approve. I really hope Priscilla 2 covers the Naked Gun years.
2023 watch #731: The Color Purple (1985) "I don't know how to fight. All I know how to do is stay alive."
2023 watch #730: The Piano (1993) Can a film make me hate Sam Neill? Apparently so.
2023 watch #729: Citizen Kane (1941) An absolute masterpiece by the most hideous man alive.
2023 watch #728: The Thin Man (1934) Incredibly funny detective story, and immediately my favorite screen couple. Gotta find me a Nora. Not in the James Joyce way. Well, ok, that too.
2023 watch #727: Bell, Book, and Candle (1958) Kim Novak hypnotizing me with a Siamese cat would 100% work. A nightclub that only lets you in if your zodiac sign has good vibes, Jack Lemmon as a creepy gay warlock, and Pyewacket acting his ass off in alternate universe Vertigo.
2023 watch #726: Cool World (1992) I think Bakshi wanted to fuck Jessica Rabbit (same, no shade there), and in trying to make real his dream, he was kicked by a horse.
2023 watch #725: Ferrari (2023) Second biopic I've seen where "the wrong kid died", which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice. Beautiful photography, and Cruz is Machiavellian when she finally gets to let loose.
2023 watch #724: Carol (2015) Gals being pals is great when you ain't got a man in your ear telling you it's not. Still weird to see Harvey Weinstein’s name on something.
2023 watch #723: The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) I think Scrooged will stay my favorite version of the story, but this was fun and charming, and we need more serious actors thrown in with Muppets.
2023 rewatch #722: Scrooged (1988) Top 3 Christmas movie. Programming for cats turned out to be incredibly prescient, and The Night The Reindeer Died was basically Violent Night (2022). "The Jews taught me this great word. 'Schmuck'. I was a schmuck, and now I'm not a schmuck."
2023 rewatch #721: The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) Beautiful in 35mm, and Jennifer Jason Leigh's motormouth monologues and Robbins' mispronunciations are things of wonder.
2023 rewatch #720: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) First time seeing it with a crowd and uncensored. Alamo movie parties are the way to watch everything, especially the perfect holiday movie.
2023 watch #719: Ever After (1998) Fun 90s take on Cinderella that replaces the mice with Leonardo Da Vinci and a twink. Melanie Lynskey should be the star of everything she's in.
2023 watch #718: While You Were Sleeping (1995) Nobody can make creepy stalker shit sweet and charming like Sandra Bullock. “Argentina has great beef. Beef and Nazis.”
2023 watch #717: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) Woof. Thank god for the exposition/recap at the beginning. No way in hell I'd remember the first one. This is just Wet Panther with the whole "tell the rest of the world Atlantis exists" subplot. Wetkanda Forever.
2023 watch #716: The Iron Claw (2023) Stellar tragedy, and it's absolutely Efron's movie. I actually got to see one of Kerry's last matches as a kid, shortly before his suicide. I never would've guessed he was missing a foot.
2023 watch #715: The Idle Class (1921) Charming, with awful mustaches and great physical comedy.
2023 watch #714: The Pirate (1948) Even I swooned. Goddamn.
2023 watch #713: The Wicker Man (1973) The obvious influence on Hot Fuzz hit like a ton of bricks. This and Midsommar taught me if I ever go to a secluded island village and the girls start getting their tiddies out, I should enjoy the show for like 5 minutes, then dip.
2023 watch #712: Pickup On South Street (1953) You know, school made me think microfiche would be a MUCH larger part of my day-to-day life. Beautiful dames and Communism is a better tradeoff, though, and this has all three.
2023 rewatch #711: Arachnophobia (1990) A very Spielberg thriller comedy with John Goodman just off doing his own movie as Carl Spackler. What more do you need?
2023 watch #710: Love And Monsters (2020) Fun little monster movie. Reminded me of Zombieland by way of Fallout, Tremors, and the ending of Tár. Boy deserves much more work.
2023 watch #709: The Passionate Friends (1949) I'd heard this was a huge influence on Phantom Thread, and it shows. "You gave me love and kindness and loyalty. But it was the love you'd give a dog. And the kindness you'd give a beggar."
2023 watch #708: Marked Woman (1937) I don't know, man. Running your escorts out of a club named Club Intimate just sounds like you're begging to be raided.
2023 watch #707: Batman Returns (1992) Part of Alamo's Queer Film Theory 101, and yeah, I can see it. I need Penguin's luxurious-ass purple robe.
2023 watch #706: It's A Wonderful Life (1946) Almost a century later, no line has aged less than "Do you know how long it takes a working man to save $5000?"
2023 watch #705: The Heartbreak Kid (1972) Lenny, what the fuck are you doing, Lenny? A case study for George Costanza's plan to do the opposite of your every instinct.
2023 rewatch #704: Batman (1989) We were robbed of a Billy Dee Williams Two-Face.
2023 watch #703: Now, Voyager (1942) The original spinster-girl-becomes-hot-after-taking-off-her-glasses-then-learns-how-to-love-and-be-loved.
2023 watch #702: Wonka (2023) Sweet and charming found-family story, with a fun heist, half the supporting cast of Peep Show, and shorts inseam length discourse.
