For the spooky season, I'll feature a Hallowtober deep-space object each week. Week two: Casper the Friendly Ghost Nebula. Its nebulosity consists of blue reflection (eyes), dark dust (face/shading), and red Hα emission. #astrophotography #astronomy #nature #longexposure #eastcoastkin #photography

Last night’s observation was of the nebula Sh2-140, which illustrates two ways to see a molecular cloud: the dust in it hides myriad background stars in the lower half of the image; and a massive young star that formed from it illuminates its edge with ionising light, making the gas there glow. 🔭🧪

Today in space: The Hera spacecraft is about to perform a hard burn so it can meet up with asteroid Dimorphos. 4 years ago, NASA deliberately crashed a probe into Dimorphos. Starting next month, Hera will map the wreckage. 🧪🔭 www.esa.int/Space_Safety...

Thank you for standing with us, for believing in community‑rooted conservation, and for choosing a future where these remarkable birds continue to waddle, bray, and raise their chicks on a coastline that still feels like home. #birds 🦑 🌎 🌿 #NotBy2035 #penguins
Somme pretty nice tidal interactions going on in the NGC474 galaxy and its neighboring galaxies. This #astrophotography is a collaborative work with @vbioret.bsky.social with around 31h of subs total. The night is dark and full of wonders 😇. Where do you put this @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social ?
Finally posting recent captures! This week's <60mins #astro exposures. #astronomy #astrophotography #eaa
OTD in 1881, Charles Darwin published his last book, on earthworms. It reflected a long interest in animal minds: “One alternative alone is left, namely, that worms, although standing low in the scale of organization, possess some degree of intelligence.” 🧪 🌱🐋🦋🦫 #HistSTM #philsci #pschsky #cogsci
