There is a truth humming through the soul of this podcast, from the writing to the casting it's a window reflecting a reality we are all living. Every year since January 1, 2022 on New Year's Day, Lauren Shippen (The Bright Sessions, TWO THOUSAND AND LATE) releases an episode of New Year's Day, a fiction story about two extremely different magicians named Charles Chambers and John Fogg who meet in 1890 and via a magic trick disaster become immortal. They meet up every 13 years to catch up, and each episode is one of these catch ups, so we've seen them in New York, LA, and Chicago in 1890, 1903, 1916, 1929, and we're up to 1942. They started out despising each other but their relationship is developing into what I can only hope is love, and I feel tortured that I have to wait an entire year to get even a hint of a clue as to where this is all going. I guess that is the point. This is Lauren Shippen, the story is funny and philosophical and the quality is superb and will ruin all fiction for you because nothing is better than it. Nothing period. I listen from the very beginning every year—episodes are short so this is not overwhelming, it's only a complete joy. Listen to "Chapter V - 1942, Los Angeles" here.

Ash's fear: She has a recurring nightmare that a creature that looks and sounds just like her traps her somewhere and takes over her life. She knows it shouldn't bother her-it's just a dream - but it always leaves her screaming.
Cal's Fear: Hell. Cal tells themself they don't actually believe in hell anymore, not since they gave up the whole Catholic bag, but deep down, there's the overwhelming fear that when they die, they'll be forced into eternal damnation
Bremmer's fear: Being deemed not worth the effort - if Bremmer were to say how he truly feels, or go after something he wants, or reveal one of his secrets, the people who love him would realize that he's too much work and leave him.
Jo's Fear: Jo would say her fear is that she'll outlive everyone she loves-she's had to watch her grandparents and cousins lose children, and that seems like the worst possible thing that could happen to a person. But if she dug deep, she'd have to admit her real fear is dying before she's had a chance to do everything she wants to do. She's worried that the moment she goes from having fun to really caring, it will get ripped away from her.
