laurenshippen I usually like doing a big roundup of everything | loved throughout the year but this year l know I'm going to forget so much that I'm almost scared to even try. This year was full of beautiful wonderful original art but it also kicked my ass, these last few months especially, and I feel like my brain is total mush. So. To start. A collection I started early in the year of screencaps from the year that captured the vibe. It's no surprise that four of the true standout shows this year nailed it: the pitt, Andor, squid game, and pluribus. But I didn't just watch tv! I also confirmed that, yes, astrobot is as perfect as a video game ever gets and then I lost so much of my mind playing blue prince that I haven't played much of anything else this year. I fell totally in love with Red Valley, dove into the Metropolis and Soul Operator (and had the pleasure of hanging with those Seattle creators!) and reopened my Audible subscription just so I could listen to Hit Singles and the new season of Unlicensed. I sat around the Camlann and Hearthbound fires and made the final climb of The Tower The Long Walk is the Only Movie to me right now. I wish I read more. Idk man, Suzanne Collins has still got the juice, that's the best I've got. It was actually a banner year for theater for me and even though some of the shows I saw were limited runs or closed fully, I'm still excited by where Broadway is at right now. Garbage Day and Ryan Broderick's Panic World podcast continue to be my tether to sanity. grandson released an album in September and | listened to it enough that he became my top artist and album for the year.

The Bright Sessions It would be frankly impossible for me to return to covering audio fiction without acknowledging yesterday’s surprise Epilogue to celebrate this show’s tenth anniversary. While Welcome to Night Vale is the show that brought me to this medium, and Limetown, Archive 81, and ars PARADOXICA that kept me here in those early years, it was Lauren Shippen’s voice that truly showed me that this world was something I needed to play an active part in. It was so punk rock, the way in which she took her friends from acting class and together willed their careers into existence by simply making stories that they believed in. We were take to such wonderful heights across 7 brilliant seasons, and I would have been completely okay never visiting these characters again. And yet the way in which it’s delivered? As Dr. Bright delivers updates about this strange and wonderful found family at the graveside of Agent Green, with a brief appearance from Shippen’s own Sam, who was visiting her parents’ plots nearby. It doesn’t feel conspiratorial. It doesn’t feel like we need to be ripped back in because the intrigue never stopped happening. In fact, it feels like we know all we need to know: that these characters we loved are all doing okay. That they love each other. That they’re growing and changing and just doing their best to be the people we loved all along. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We were all so scared and more separate than we'd ever been but we knew- we knew that everyone was trying their best to help those who were sick, to figure out a vaccine, all of it. (then) And we were scared together. We mourned together. We celebrated the people who were putting their lives on the line to try and help people like Chuck, even when they knew it was hopeless. Hell, even our fucking government coughed up some of that money they've been spending on bombs and corporate bail-outs and fucking trillion dollar jets and they actually gave it to people who were struggling and then- then- MAC: It all went to shit. HARPER: It all went to shit! Everyone lost their goddamn minds and decided that actually, it wasn't really that bad in the first place and we all over-reacted and that the real problem was too little AI clogging up our life and too much civil liberty for people who have never bothered anybody!

It's usually simmering right beneath the surface - a dear friend once described it as a ""tiny little alligator demon sometimes waiting to snap its jaws living patiently inside the body of a softhearted guitar playing bread baking stucky shipper"". It is something that really only close friends see, because most of the time I do try to be soft and optimistic! I always try to see the best in people and in the world, but I don't always win that fight. This show is very much a release of a lot of rage l've felt throughout my life - after years of learning how to manage it and express it productively, it felt like it was an emotion I could finally express in my public art. Can you think of any adjectives you'd use to describe the SOUND because it's amazing. It IS amazing - Jeffrey Nils Gardner has done a spectacular job. To me, it's like the best kind of magazine collage; the kind of thing I would make when I was a teenager, cutting out photos and headlines and vibes from my music magazines and pasting them into a hodge-podge expression of angst."

So, I have a proposition for the two of you. l've spoken briefly about this with Briggon, but I am writing a podcast (a radio drama basically) and would love for the two of you to consider taking part. To give you a little info about the series: each episode is a therapy session with someone who has supernatural abilities. The first season is probably just going to be two patients - Sam and Caleb. Sam involuntarily time travels when she has panic attacks and Caleb is a high school football player who can feel the emotions of everyone around him. Basically, the abilities that the patients have are metaphors for real life problems (anxiety, hormones, etc.) I've already cast myself as Sam and Briggon, I think you would be perfect for Caleb. Julia, I had you in mind for Dr. Bright, the therapist. Meaning that out of all of us, you would have the most work, seeing as Dr. Bright is in every episode. Her dialogue is mostly therapy questions and so on, but she's got a sort of nefarious purpose lingering in the background so she'll have some very interesting stuff to do down the line. I'm still in the very early stages - only the first two episodes are written. But I'm thinking the first season will be about 10 episodes - so five episodes per patient (still debating if I want to add a third). Each episode is between 10-20 minutes and there's very little production involved given that it's a podcast. Anyway, if this sounds at all of interest to either of you, l'd love to send you both the early drafts of the first two episodes so you can get a better idea of what to expect. No hard feelings if you don't have the time to do something like this, or just think it's the worst idea anyone's ever had. I just think you both are crazy talented and want to make more excuses to work with you! So let me know!
