Beavers can convert stream corridors to persistent carbon sinks Open access | Published 18 March 2026 When extrapolating across all floodplain areas in Switzerland suitable for beaver recolonisation, beaver-driven carbon burial could offset approximately 1.2–1.8% of the country’s annual carbon emissions, achieved solely through a nature-based solution requiring no active management or direct costs.
Beavers in Kent have a hopeful future thanks to new funding from Natural England. Kent Wildlife Trust will be working with Beaver Trust and other partners to improve the beavers' resilience and genetic diversity. The population will be boosted through new releases, habitat restoration, and work with 250+ landowners and stakeholders to facilitate coexistence. The Stour hosts England's largest beaver population, living in close quarters with human communities. A wonderful opportunity for us to learn how to live alongside beavers once more!
