But if you calculate the *distance* from the centre of each tile to the random point, the distance is not equally spread out - it differs systematically by location. E.g. the mean distances from my above 10,000 simulations look like this

It makes sense that this is the case, e.g. the maximum distance between a point in one of the corners (to the other corner) is twice the maximum distance from the centre (to any of the corners). And there's more ways for a point to be close to a centre point than a corner point etc.
