They are quite literally just files on the system and whenever new data comes in, UPDATE tells PelOrion's render process to re-render the movie so that it's up to date. Here's an example. (rf001a.mv)

that's so funky, does that mean used XLs will come with renders with their last received data on the disk?
To answer your question regarding time to render, it depends on how many layers the page has and how many images or icon sequence it has. By far, the movies that take the longest are regionals (rf001a and ro001a) because of all the animated icons and the basemap. Each movie with icons is 30 frames.
