There is no ambiguity in this moral equation; it is as clear as any moment in history. Yet America, once the nation that claimed to stand for liberty, could not summon the clarity to stand on the right side.

The trade deficit kept ballooning like a Silicon Valley C-suite exit package. And the working-class base that was supposed to benefit mostly got higher prices on dishwashers and Levis.
Russia, meanwhile—America’s greatest geopolitical rival, whose autocratic ruler gorges himself on expansionism and whose hands are still wet with Ukrainian blood—is untouched. Exempt. Off-limits. Apparently, the rules don’t apply to friends of the family.
