Scariest things on the beach in 2026: - Sand (hot) - Birds (hungry) - Umbrellas (that don't meet safety standard ASTM F3681 FOR WIND SPEEDS UP TO 30 MPH)

Thieves climbed 6 ft fence into my patio and stole my umbrella. I hope it wasn't safe at any speed because in Santa Maria we do have wind. It was around 3:30 in the morning, I heard the noise, I blamed the cat and thank God I went back to sleep and stayed out of their faces.

It's true. Here is James Bond using an umbrella to drive away modern dinosaurs:

I went to the beach and saw all the umbrellas and was terrified. My gut told me to sit far away from the umbrellas, but then I wondered if that was worse because there were fewer obstacles to slow them down. Does the CPSC have advice for how to stay safe when other people have substandard umbrellas?

For me, the scariest thing in the beach is rapid onset aging that means you die within weeks, and also you can't get off the beach.
