Aerial photograph (my own) of the twin harbours of Mevagissey, Cornwall, UK. December 2023. The water is azure and a few fishing boats shelter in the outer harbour, smaller boats in the older inner harbour. A 19th century cast iron lighthouse marks the entrance.

Cottage door, early-mid twentieth century, near Helford Passage, Cornwall. The door is of timber with faded and peeling blue paint and has a margin glazed upper panel from which the central leaded lights have mostly fallen.

Aerial photograph of Mowzul a harbour village on the southwest tip of Cornwall set in a steeply sided break in cliffs. The village is set around the beach which in turn is protected by stone piers, first built in the 14th century, rebuilt and extended several times.

Circa 1820 villa with interesting Gothicised details. 3 storeys stucco faced, flanking Ionic pilasters. 2 storey bow to right of entrance. Low pitch slate roof with scalloped openwork eaves board. 3 casement windows 2nd floor, 2 on 1st and ground floors, tripartite on bow. The centre light of the tripartite windows and the other 1st floor window all French casements. All have 4-centred heads, marginal Gothic glazing and hood moulds over. Delicate iron balconies on elaborate brackets to 1st floor windows, that on bow with trellis supports to tent-shaped canopy. Vaulted open porch with 4-centred heads to openings, clustered shaft supports fluted pilasters to inner side of those flanking door. Frieze and moulded cornice projecting at corners, iron balustrade shove. Door of 4 moulded panels, upper 2 with 4-centred heads. 4-centred arched fanlight. Deep panelled reveals and soffit. The rear elevation is slate hung. Gothic windows with marginal glazing. Tuscan porch.

his is a map of Falmouth Haven. It forms part of an atlas that belonged to William Cecil Lord Burghley, Elizabeth I's Secretary of State. Burghley used this atlas to illustrate domestic matters. The map takes the form of a bird's eye view. St Mawes and its larger sister castle, Pendennis are shown. These were built by Henry VIII as part of a defensive chain of fortresses to protect the south coast of England after 1538 after a peace treaty was signed by Francis I of France and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor King of Spain, making an invasion of their combined forces likely. The castles are depicted with accuracy showing their architectural form. The rest of the information presented here is shown with equal care: individual buildings are depicted with their particular architectural features recorded, such as the stepped gable of the tower in a college quadrangle in ‘perm:borough’ and thatched cottages. A dominant feature of the map is the network of field boundaries that the draughtsman has recorded. It is not clear whether these are a generic representation of fields or whether they are actual observed boundaries. Areas of raised ground are shown as are forests. The road network is highlighted in red, suggesting a preoccupation with communication routes. Lord Burghley has annotated the map in places, labelling a rocky outcrop ‘black rock’. Features of the coast and the sea surrounding it were of great importance as knowledge of them is vital for matters of defence, an issue of great significance during Elizabeth’s reign when England was under threat from Spain. Interior of 19th century farmhouse after 20 years of abandonment. The structural carpentry (roof and first floor) have rotted and collapsed inwardly, papers have been lost from walls, which are being colonised by vegetation. At the top of the image is a former bedroom the fire surround having fallen, in the foreground are the stairs leading nowhere, with plaster having fallen off exposing laths beneath and the stair rail is part collapsed. Two doors, one above the other with granite steps to one side providing access to a first floor door, which is a smart panelled front door to the house. The lower door under this is a simple two part (stable type) plank door and leads into what was originally the ‘cellar’ - in Cornwall a space for the processing of fish and the storage of tackle / nets etc. The steps retain original wrought iron railings and are providing space for for growing pink flowers in pots.
