However, the symbolism of the paper clip during the occupation did not so much derive from its supposed origin as from the fact that it is used to hold things together.

According to Store Norske Leksikon, there is no documentary evidence of a widespread belief in a Norwegian origin for the paper clip prior to the 1960s. Thus, it was probably its use a symbol for national unity during the war that promoted the myth, rather than the opposite.
