Melee players believe the game is perfect and has no design problems, so you will get a lot of people in this thread trying to justify this completely ridiculous mechanic. what little L cancelling adds to the game's tactical depth is completely overshadowed by its bloated effect on the learning curve and physical stress on players' hands. there's something with the romanticization of a game that has zero patches (even though it doesn't and we are continuously patching it as a community) that leads people to be so dogmatic about game design, which is understandable because most gamers don't know a thing about game design. thus the constant justifications that every mechanic in melee should stay exactly the way it is. I'd like to hear what people say about drift polling, phantom hits having incorrect logic, 50% of the cast being completely unusable, etc. there are also obvious oversights we have just accepted to the point of veneration like chain throws and RTC which completely suck the interactive nature out of the punish game, which is kind of the whole appeal to competitive Melee (imo). instead you'll find people justifying these mechanics because they benefit some bad matchups or something equally, ridiculously short sighted, as if it couldnt have have been achieved in more interesting ways. truth is melee could have been a much better game without l cancelling, but you won't hear this from people who are invested in it being exactly the way it is—especially as competitors, which further complicates the conflict of interest between gamer and game designer
