Happy birthday America! “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” What a mission statement! An aspiration we can all get behind. The relationship between our two countries hasn’t always been smooth, but it endures because of our shared commitment to the fundamental values of democracy, liberty and the rule of law. Because of our shared belief that everyone – no matter their background, no matter where they start – should have the chance to build a good life for themselves and their families. Even though these are tough times – and those ideals can feel very distant right now – I know our relationship will endure. I know better days lie ahead, and we can reach them together. So here’s to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Cheers!

Hearing those words from Henry Nowak’s family is heartbreaking. It’s hard to imagine such enormous pain and grief. No one should die like that. This was an evil murder made so much worse by the police response. The independent investigation must uncover how they got it so badly wrong, and all police forces must act on its findings to make sure nothing like this can happen again. - Ed Davey
