It's mind boggling to think of people like Mr Otero Barreto, not nearly as decorated, but just as brave, fighting and dying in some cases for their country, then have it turn around and shit all over them.

This could have been many of my uncles from PR. 3-4 tours in Vietnam. 1 did not survive coming home. PTSD and heroine got him in 1975. The others are all good and living their best lives luckily. Thanks for the class
Also, as an aside, most of the time when I see photos from Vietnam, it get's my inner sergeant all fired up. "You're in the jungle: take that cigarette out of your mouth . . . hold that pig correctly . . . if you can see him, stop shooting." 19 and untrained, they were doing their best, but damn.
Thanks as always, Eddie. I'd served in the 25th, so I'd heard of him before, but I'm glad more will now hear his story, too. I remember also hearing that Puerto Rican soldiers, per capita, have earned more medals for valor than soldiers from any state. Sounds like they've already earned statehood.

Vietnam fought France for independence, won it 1954. Geneva Accords promised nationwide elections in 1956. The US refused to let them happen — because Eisenhower’s own administration estimated Ho Chi Minh would win ~80% of the vote.

Good morning, and Happy Sunday, Eddie! Mr. Barreto is remarkable as he was deployed basically the entire conflict. I'll never understand how these men and women sacrifice so much, only to return to rebuild their lives on their own. Thank you for dedication to others.

Thanks again, Eddie. Another testimony to the talents and skills of underappreciated minorities. Every story like this reminds me of the immense stupidity of those who would oppose DEI initiatives. The lost talents of oppressed peoples represents a tremendous loss to the oppressive society.
Born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico in 1937, Otero Barreto studied biology and planned to go to medical school. Instead, he enlisted in the Army — and ended up serving in some of the most elite units of the era: 101st Airborne, 82nd Airborne, 25th Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade. (cont)
