Meanwhile, on twitter, did you know that Mary Shelley never could have written Frankenstein (which is about magnets as you know) because her boyfriend was really into magnets? In fact, when you think about it, that's why women in general don't write great literature (chicks aren't into magnets).

People on Twitter wake up and just lie. lol

The only magnetism in the book is between Victor and the captain who rescues him from the ice…

She definitely wrote it and she definitely was a genius. Her mom was Mary Wollstonecraft, so she grew up in an environment of women writing important things. Is it possible Percy collaborated? Yes, but she was also a collaborator in his work too- but she kept writing good stuff after he died.

Sounds like there’s something nasty in the woodshed.

Stella Gibbons made fun of pseudo-intellectual sexist dudes a hundred years ago by having a dipshit character in Cold Comfort Farm who was writing a book about how all the novels of the Bronte sisters were secretly written by their brother Branwell. Kind of delightful to see it happen in real life
Ozma · Nov 11
Women wrote none of those novels which comprise most of the rise of he novel. Men wrote them and gifted them to the women. Men are very generous that way. Hooray for men!

There's just so much I could say here that I don't even know where to start... (I'm a chick, though, and maybe that's the problem.)

Frankenstein, famously about magnets.

Thank god my literature professors weren't academics. 🙄

If only Trump had a partner as smart as Percy Bysse Shelley!

Mary Shelley was related to her boyfriend? 🤨
taterpie · Nov 11
I mean the reality is he was into all those things, and wouldn't shut the fuck up, so she wrote a book using everything he said. She eclipsed his own work in the process. Which is why men should never speak.

these types are into magnets because they have no magnetism

It couldn't possibly be that Mary was commenting on her husband's fledgling turn into a techbro... 🙄

Frankenstein is about magnets? What book did I read then?

Percy Bysshe Shelley was into opium, alcohol, infidelity, and little else. Meanwhile, Rosalind Franklin woke from her grave just to tell that dude to STFU.

Ah yes. The pressing status quo and influentional lobby of the feminist movement from... *check notes* the 1810's.

is this why chad-likes and beta chads have moved away from the term "chick magnet", because obviously women have no magnetism?

then why are there chick magnets
The Abominable Dr. Vibes · Nov 11
Man it’s a good thing her mom was not a woman who did anything notable at all, certainly nothing remotely feminist

Very few people reading War and Peace manage to persist long enough to get to the chapters on magnetism.

It's almost like people are attracted to those who have common interests Or something
Button · Nov 11
Who ever heard of husbands and wives having similar interests? Clearly the rough draft manuscript in Mary's handwriting with Percy's notes and suggestions in his handwriting is an elaborate fraud
piglet42 · Nov 12
Why does he refer to her husband as "boyfriend"?
Jamie Hardt · Nov 11
The thing about Frankenstein is it doesn’t really feature any electricity or magnetism, what it has a lot of is regret, existential dread, and megalomaniacal continental aristocrats shaped by their class position and gender relations.

Gals, if you're looking to attract a beau, here's a little expert advice from a man: Magnets. Eat at least 3-5 magnets before you even think about approaching a man or writing literature.

@thaliamims.bsky.social · Nov 11
Mary wrote a shit-ton of stuff, much of it after Percy's death. To be fair to Syd there, I don't know how much of it was about magnets.
Julia Is Waving, Not Drowning · Nov 11
I have encountered this bullshit before and well read Mr. Shelley’s prose and it’s obvious
Another Matt · Nov 11
This is even funnier given there's a specific INCREDIBLY FAMOUS ANECDOTE of how, when and where it was written. To which other multiple incredibly famous people were witnesses. ALSO, she edited and promoted HIS works, not the other way round.

The original tweet comes off as a joke to me, so dunking on it seriously runs the risk of painting Bluesky as humorless scolds, but I know how "it's a joke son" is used as an excuse to pass off genuinely questionable politics...

Percy Bysshe Shelley did write a horror story on the same trip to Switzerland (which they took in a futile attempt to escape the Year Without a Summer), but it was about a vampire named Dracula
