Johnson family dismisses nuisance suit after city fixes gas works park danger Today, the City completed abatement of the nuisance at Gas Works Park and the Johnson Family Plaintiffs dropped their first lawsuit. "I still don't understand how the City punted and allowed a historical preservation committee to be in charge of a public safety matter. They all dragged their feet for years while kids were hurt and died. There was a plan in place for years, and they still wouldn't make the changes, and now my son is dead. I don't know how people stood on top of the hill at the park and watched kids climb around in a toxic waste dump for so many years. Gasworks was never a safe place, and the City knew it was unsafe and did nothing. Every day I miss my son. Having to wake up every day knowing he is dead is torture. Some days it feels like he is still here, and some days it feels like he never was here. His absence is completely overwhelming. I think about all the life he doesn't get to have, and the life I don't get to see. I wanted to see my son grow up. I will have to live the rest of my life not knowing what his story could have been. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Mass protest planned against weapons conference to oppose wars for profit SEATTLE, WA Seattle Convention Center Arches on Pike March 18 at 12pm Hundreds of companies that make up the military supply chain will be gathering at the Seattle Convention Center March 18-19 for the Aerospace and Defense Supplier Summit (DSS). Concerned community organizations will be hosting a mass protest outside the convention center to oppose war and genocide profiteering and demand that the governor cancel and ban the conference from returning to Seattle and instead invest in jobs that meet peoples’ needs. As the US continues its brutal war of aggression against Iran, it has already killed hundreds of civilians and spent over $11 billion within the first week of combat. The people are outraged that government spending continues to serve the needs of major weapons companies, rather than of the people. They will also call attention to the connections between these weapons companies and the ICE attacks on migrant communities. Last time DSS was in Seattle in 2024, our mass protest forced their Boeing Conference Day onto zoom. This year, Boeing has backed out of a prominent sponsorship, though many of the companies present are within the Boeing supply chain.

candlelight vigil: , PLEASE STAND WITH WOMEN IN BLACK ON THE SOLSTICE, Sunday, December 21st, “National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day!” This year already at least 245 homeless/temporarily housed people have died outside/in public/by violence. These deaths demand a reckoning. Please join us at our annual Women in Black Solstice Vigil and Ritual on Sunday, December 21st, to honor ALL who’ve died this year. We’ll start with an informal ritual at sunset (4:21 PM) at the Tree of Life (Victor Steinbrueck Park, north of Pike Place Market), and then do our silent, candlelight vigil from 5-6 PM at Westlake Park (4th/Pine, NE corner). There’ll be an aftergathering nearby with food and fellowship courtesy of our Health Care for the Homeless partners.

We appreciate these questions and, more importantly, we hear and respect the concerns being raised by members of our community. Executive-elect Zahilay joins our residents in unequivocally condemning any facilitation of human rights violations in Gaza and anywhere in the world. The suffering in Gaza is horrific, and we support continued pressure on all institutions to ensure their actions do not contribute to the violation of human rights. As he steps into his new role, Girmay will be reaching out to Microsoft leadership to understand their recent actions to address these concerns, and issues that continue to be raised in recent community letters. The transition committee includes more than 100 people from across King County representing labor, business, nonprofits, social services, elected officials, and community organizations. No individual committee member has any more authority or influence than any other member. The co-chairs facilitate a workshop within a subcommittee and report out a summary of what the participants discussed.

Real Change: Why did you decide to run for mayor? Katie Wilson: I made this decision in February and the precipitating event was the Feb. 11 special election on social housing. Honestly, up until Feb. 11, I had no notion of running for office. I’m a big supporter of social housing. I believe it’s an important part of the answer to our housing crisis. And when I saw Prop 1A pass in the landslide, I was very excited. But then immediately after that, I was very worried because, as we know, our current mayor Bruce Harrell was the face of the opposition campaign, the Prop 1B campaign, which was funded by Amazon and Microsoft and the Chamber of Commerce, and was really designed to undermine this funding measure for our social housing developer. There are a number of things that Harrell has already done in office to undermine social housing. And my immediate worry seeing the victory was if he is reelected and is in office for another four years, he could easily continue to try to undermine this project and it could easily fail. I believe social housing needs strong support and partnership from the city, from the mayor’s office. And for that reason, I began thinking, “Wow, it’s really important that someone challenged this guy.” I was aware of the political situation where a lot of progressive institutions, including the labor leadership of many of the labor unions, were bought into his reelection for various reasons — some good, some bad. And so it quickly became clear to me that it was unlikely that a viable progressive challenger would jump into the race because of that political dynamic. And I thought it was very important that someone viable challenge him and realized that I might be in a position to do so. So that’s why I jumped in.
