The trouble extends beyond the issue at hand. Trump claimed unilateral authority to alter the Constitution. In the same way that he is shoving open the Overton window on birthright citizenship, he is also, more subtly, opening it on the topic of whether he ought to have the power of a dictator. In other words, he is normalizing the growing anti-democratic sentiment on the right. If Trump’s efforts to overturn birthright citizenship fail, he’s already planted the seeds in the minds of his base that this ability to change the Constitution should be his, and that any opposition must be illegitimate. This aspect of his statements is less remarked on, perhaps because Trump has so often transgressed democratic norms and questioned the legitimacy of democratic institutions that this more subtle maneuver seems to pale in comparison. But it’s actually one of the most dangerous claims he’s made yet.
Finally, I have seen the day… the day when my solution, simply, is to kill these people. Kill them all…

I’ve been calling the “sharing economy” the Urchin Economy, as in street urchin, named for the street kids that are always hanging around in fiction set during the Victorian period, ready to accept a schilling or two to do some chore for a protagonist. They have no job security, no safety net, they’re treated as if they’re utterly disposable. Of course today, there’s always some high-tech middleman looking to take a cut of these transactions.

After the war many things were said about Germans but truthfully there were many Germans who risked their lives to protect others. I wonder if American were in the same place would they be as courageous?
A lot of people were in a state of terror. They tried to be happy, have parties, play records, see their friends. But it was as if they were infected by a virus. Like fear was a virus. It passed from person to person. Like from a bite one to the other. The bitten became the biters. Parents were more silent in the presence of their children, fearing that their words against the Nazis might get repeated as school. People put their heads down and shuffled through their lives, hoping to escape the notice of the authorities. But that was nearly impossible.
