We've built an entire economy around selling people the feeling of control through bets, hacks, subscriptions, and optimization. But the model only works if people stay desperate. New essay on control and agency, financial nihilism, belief markets, the manosphere, and spectacle during war.

Words i’ve struggled to put together for my own thoughts on this situation, and far more brilliant. Thanks for writing and sharing Kyla. We’ve swung so hard into personal agency that we’ve lost all semblance of control of the system.

Desperation funds the illusion. Real agency starts when you own assets that compound without daily inputs. Kids taught me this: you can't optimize love, only steward it long-term.

1. Another great piece. 2. Is there a way to a) get access to the newsletter, b) support it, but c) put in some money? I don't have the cash for the ask subscription, but I also want to pay for my free access. Is there some middle road here? I value the work.

You really do have an exquisite mind operating astutely from a rather unique position. Your work will be studied for quite some time when the dust settles from our next decade and a half. You're at the start and the road is long. Remember to pack snacks.

I loved this, ty for writing it and synthesising it; a really compelling cross-section of what it means to say a culture is in decline. And it helps me imagine more clearly whats in the minds of the compulsively corrupt ppl in power in MAGA media and the WH.
