The zig-zag seems to be the obviously worst part of this design and I'm confused why you can't shift the ramp on the left further to the left

Good question actually... my best guesses conditional on there even being a good reason for this. Note the location is Sunset/Alvarado - grade breaks need to be perpendicular to the ped access rte; but it looks like they have enough space to move the leftmost ramp further away. See alt text
