The Red Yao women's secret to long, healthy, and dark hair lies in their use of fermented rice water, a practice passed down through generations. They also have a unique tradition of cutting their hair only once in their lives, at the age of 16, as a coming-of-age ritual.

Cutting her hair at sixteen marks her coming of age. Her glossy black hair, perhaps ankle-length, must take great care to maintain. But nourishing it likely benefits her whole body. Her bright smile, black-and-pink outfit, and well-kept hair must be truly charming.

I love hearing about a culture that feels the same way I do about long hair!

So thick scalp, I'm clearly not a Red Yao 😢

Wow! So much maintenance must go into keeping the hair healthy and shiny! Beautiful photos, Kieron!

As someone w/long-tho nowhere near This Long!-hair, I find the Red Yao women’s haircare routine interesting. Obvs not something we in “the West” could easily follow, but I admire-once again-a culture rooted in harmony w/the natural world.🤔to get that water, then again fermented may=too… “fragrant?”🫢

I am using a brand from this culture as well, in the form of a bar, no plastic.. it's fascinating, I loved how they twisted up their hair!!

Long hair is also spiritually related in many Native American tribes. They have had to go to court to prevent men's hair being cut in prison.
