With each indigenous group that becomes assimilated, another unique culture vanishes. It is easy to dismiss what we do not understand. We are all different; we are all the same. www.vanishingculturesphotography.com

While in the ancient city of Kathmandu, I had the rare privilege of meeting — and photographing — the Living Goddess of Patan, Samita Bajracharya. Just eight years old, yet regarded as the earthly embodiment of divine power, she resides within the sacred confines of the Kumari Ghar, the “god-house,” where her every gesture carries spiritual weight. Each day, behind the intricately carved windows of that centuries-old sanctuary, the Living Goddess performs her rituals — serene, untouchable, and radiant with the quiet gravity of something far beyond childhood. To look upon her is said to bring good fortune; to stand before her is to feel time itself pause.
Puberty marks a dramatic transition. Across the valley, young women’s bodies become the canvas of cultural identity and beauty ideals: Girls begin to style their hair and decorate themselves with beads, shells, and metal jewelry. Growing up in the Omo Valley means growing up inside strong cultural worlds — with deep-rooted systems of belonging, oral history, and ecological knowledge. Yet it also means facing profound tension between tradition and modernity.
At nine years old, his world is a frayed jacket passed down from an uncle lost to the snows, boots mended with sinew, and that single, sacred treasure: a battered deck of playing cards, scavenged from a tourist's discard pile in Leh.
Upon seeing the wide-eyed gaze of this innocent schoolgirl, her tousled hair framing a face filled with quiet curiosity and unspoken stories from a distant classroom, I had to put my camera down. In that moment of stillness, I reflected on the fleeting nature of my own life—the privileges, the cultures fading away before my eyes, and how a single child's unfiltered expression can cut through the lens to remind us of our shared humanity.
The mountainous terrain of northern Vietnam makes access to schools difficult. Many villages are located far from the nearest primary or secondary school, often requiring children to walk several kilometers each way—sometimes over steep, muddy, or dangerous paths. During the rainy season, travel can become impossible. Because families worry about their daughters’ safety on these journeys, girls are often kept at home.

Girls in seclusion tightly tie cords around their legs to increase the size and weight of the calf. They also partake in the skin scraping ritual.
The ritual of seclusion is a traditional rite of passage practiced among various indigenous tribes in Brazil's Upper Xingu region, such as the Kalapalo, Kamaiurá, Kuikuro, and others within the Xingu Indigenous Park. It marks the transition from girlhood to womanhood, beginning at the onset of a girl's first menstruation (typically around puberty), and serves to prepare her physically, culturally, and socially for adult responsibilities, including marriage and community roles.
According to oral tradition, the Apatani women were renowned for their beauty, which unfortunately made them targets for abduction by men from neighboring tribes. To protect themselves, the Apatani elders devised a radical plan. They began tattooing the women's faces and inserting large wooden plugs into their nostrils to make them appear "unattractive" and thus deter potential kidnappers. "I have researched this and can not find the true reason. I find this explanation not credible"
Marriages are typically arranged, but both parties must consent, reflecting a degree of autonomy. Girls are considered eligible for marriage around puberty, which aligns with tribal norms in the region. Adolescent girls live in separate dormitories, learning social norms, songs, and dances, often until their mid-teens (around 14–16). Actual marriage likely occurs in the early to mid-teens (13–16 years) for girls, though government interventions have aimed to raise this age.
Even though the Kondh society is patriarchal. Divorce is permitted, as is remarriage after widowhood. Even with arranged marriages, both parties must give their consent. Kondh girls are tattooed on their faces at 10 years of age—if they do not submit to this, they are viewed as unsuitable for marriage. Although child marriage was common among some Kondh groups, real gender issues are to be found among plains groups that have come into close contact with their Hindu neighbors and adopted many of their customs, such as demanding dowries at the time of marriage.
For the Wauja, the feathers of birds are their ‘clothing.’ After being killed, the birds are ‘undressed’ (plucked). Their plumes, having become ‘leftovers,’ will go to make up one or more adornments, mixing feathers from different birds, in compliance with the patterns of visual composition. In the case of human beings, the concept of feather adornments is conceptually similar to clothing. Featherwork is a vital element in many rituals.
The Indian Act in Canada, enacted in 1876, imposed severe restrictions on Indigenous cultural practices, including banning powwows, the Sun Dance, and other ceremonies deemed "undesirable" by the government. These prohibitions, enforced until amendments in 1951, were part of a broader assimilative agenda, alongside policies like residential schools. Despite this, Indigenous communities preserved their traditions through clandestine gatherings, passing down songs, dances, and ceremonies in secret. Modern powwows, vibrant celebrations of culture, spirituality, and community, stand as a testament to Indigenous resilience and resistance against cultural erasure. They blend traditional elements—like drumming, regalia, and dances such as the Fancy Dance or Jingle Dress—with contemporary expressions, showcasing both survival and adaptation.

The turquoise or aqua color you see at Kuang Si Falls is a result of the light reflecting off the white calcium carbonate at the bottom and then back up through the mineral-rich water. Breathtaking cascades of water make the Kuang Si one of Luang Prabang’s most popular tourist attractions. The bottom of the falls are made up of an array of shallow pools, each one overflowing into the one below it.
These bridges span rivers and streams, providing safe passage and shelter from wind, rain, and sun. They typically feature wooden structures with long corridors, multiple pavilions, and tiered, tiled roofs resembling pagodas. The roofs often have quadrangular or hexagonal eaves, adorned with carvings of dragons, phoenixes, cranes, or other auspicious symbols.
The Raas Leela, a divine dance from Hindu mythology, portrays Lord Krishna's enchanting interplay with the gopis (cowherd maidens), symbolizing devotion and cosmic harmony. Manipuri dance, a classical form from Manipur, India, near Myanmar, beautifully embodies this tradition. Known for its graceful, fluid movements and spiritual depth, it often depicts themes like Raas Leela, blending intricate footwork, expressive gestures, and vibrant costumes to convey devotion and storytelling.
The red face paint, especially prominent among clans like the Sudosukai, serves to emphasize facial symmetry, a long nose, and expressive charm, qualities prized by the women. The men spend hours preparing, using mirrors to perfect their look, and wear elaborate costumes with feathers and beads to appear taller and more striking. During the Yaake dance, they roll their eyes and bare their teeth to showcase stamina and beauty, aiming to impress female judges who may choose them as lovers or husbands, even if either party is already married.
The clay transforms the widow into a "ghost-like figure," creating a separation from her previous life and the deceased. A widow would wear special clothing, including a net material and a grass skirt, along with the white clay. The mourning process, which includes wearing clay and special clothing, can last for a significant period, sometimes up to a year. Daughters and other family members also participated in this mourning ritual, dressing in clothing reminiscent of widowhood, although the widow's practice was the most significant. In the past, some women would even consume their husband's ashes with wild vegetables to ease their grief.
The Condong dance is a dynamic and energetic Balinese dance that serves as an opening or prelude to the classic Legong dance. It portrays a palace maidservant and features intricate movements of the fingers, hands, head, and eyes, all synchronized to the rhythms of the Gamelan orchestra. Believed to have originated in the 19th century, the Condong dance also gave its name to the stock character of a maidservant that appears in other Balinese dances.

Originally, the bright colors, including yellow, were used as war paint to strike fear into enemies and to help Huli warriors enter an altered state of consciousness.
Huli men and women use natural pigments like red ochre, yellow clay (ambua), and white lime to paint their faces and bodies. These designs signify clan affiliation, social status, and readiness for ceremonies or combat. Red ochre represents connection to the earth, while yellow signifies status. Men and women live in separate spheres, with men often residing in communal "men’s houses" and women living with children and pigs in smaller family units. This separation extends to daily activities and responsibilities.

The primary threat is the consumption of diclofenac-tainted carcasses. Diclofenac, used to treat livestock, is highly toxic to vultures, causing kidney failure and death. White-backed vultures are sometimes hunted for traditional medicine and belief practices, and they are also victims of illegal trade. Climate change and potential food scarcity due to habitat loss and other factors also contribute to the decline. The White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) is a Sub-Saharan African vultures species occurring from Mauritania east to Sudan and Ethiopia and south to northern and eastern South Africa.

Guì Zhōu or Guìzhōu Shěng is a province located in the southwestern part of China. The Changjiao Miao people live in 12 villages near each other, situated in the mountains 2,000 meters above sea level, with a total population of 4,000. On a typical day, the women simply wrap their hair behind their heads around a sharp-ended wooden board. They wear the long horns only on holidays and during festivals, together with the decorative hair bun made of linen, wool, and small amounts of ancestral hair.
Northern Vietnam...Tay traditional dress is made from homegrown cotton that is indigo dyed. There is usually little to no embroidery or other decorations. Women wear skirts or trousers, often paired with short shirts underneath and long ones worn on top. Traditional Tay homes are often stilt houses, known as "nha san," built on wooden stilts with roofs made of grass, palm fronds, bamboo, or tiles.

The village of Ban Khoang, Sapa, Lao Cai province. - Ly May welcomed me into her home on a rainy afternoon to meet her daughter, Twenty-six-year-old Tansu May. My guide had arranged with them to allow me to witness and photograph her wedding attire. The clothing was carefully removed from an array of different coloured plastic bags, and they were stored inside a large bamboo basket. I asked if I could borrow one of their plastic chairs and convinced my guide that the only way I would have enough light was to place the ladies under the protection of the overhanging roof. The chair was placed in the open courtyard while an umbrella was held over me. The rain continued for the entire time and the location and lighting were the best that I could achieve. There was a lot of laughter from the ladies at my difficult and unpleasant situation. The Red Dao wedding dress is regarded as the pinnacle of a woman’s sewing accomplishments. Mother and daughter are known to spend up to a year making nothing else but a brand-new ceremonial outfit in preparation for the big day.
The village of Songho has a circumcision cave ornamented with red and white rock paintings of animals and plants. Boys are circumcised in age groups of three years, counting, for example, all boys between 9 and 12 years old. This marks the end of their youth, and they are now initiated.
Blacksmiths, who are also initiates of the Awa, carve the masks in secret locations outside the village, often in caves.

These masks are used in various ceremonies, including funeral dances and rites for protecting crops. The rabbit is a prominent figure in Dogon cosmology, often associated with trickery and cunning.

The origin of the jingle dress is attributed to three different Ojibwa communities: the Mille Lacs, Red Lake Band of Chippewa, and the Whitefish Bay Ojibwe. The most common narrative surrounding the jingle dress involves a grandfather who, while seeking a way to heal his granddaughter, received a vision. This vision included the design of the dress, the specific sounds it would make, and the dance steps to be performed.

In the village of Huangluo, long hair is a traditional local practice. The women cut their hair once, around the age of 16, symbolizing the fact that they are adults.

The rattle is made of a gourd and wood with little stones inside of it. Bamboo stamping tubes are valued percussion instruments.

Yao Bride is sitting in front of a floor-length mirror. The Yao, also known as Mien, are an ethnic group with a presence in Laos, particularly in the northern regions. They are known for their unique cultural practices, including distinctive clothing, Taoist beliefs, and traditional crafts.
Their clothing is a defining aspect of their culture, featuring hand-spun and handwoven fabrics dyed with indigo and decorated with bold red embroidery and appliqué. The Oma headscarf, or omu, is a long piece of cloth, often over two meters long, joined to a shorter, heavily embroidered section.
The Dong people are known for their "bright cloth," which is made through a unique process of dip-dyeing, drying, and hammering. This cloth has a shiny, almost metallic, appearance and is waterproof. The final step in making their clothing is to starch the cloth with glue made from cattle skin so that the fabric is made durable and the color is made fade-resistant. The brightness of the cloth will vary, depending upon the duration of crafting and beating. The more it shines, the more precious the cloth is deemed to be.

They speak a Tai language, closely related to Lao, but have their own unique writing system. The Tai Dam maintains distinct traditions, including weaving, traditional attire, and a unique creation story.
The Flower Lolo's women's dress is famous for its intricate design, with thousands of hand-appliqued triangles. Each triangle takes several hours to sew, highlighting the extensive work and dedication involved in creating these garments. Costumes are composed of the following garments. Trousers with elasticated waist, skirt wrap crossing over at the front, 2 decorative waist sashes, jacket, and head scarf. The front of the jacket is fastened with metal bell buttons and loops.
