Note all letters are distinct in this image, but sloppily following the strokes here it is easy for them to overlap. Some specific issues: - If lower stroke of t is shortened, there is little distinction between t and r - If leftmost stroke of p is shortened or a hook added at the start of l, the two letters can look exactly the same - If the middle stroke of p and k is drawn with a steep diagonal, the two letters can look identical (similar to u vs n in Latin). In a math book, an extraordinary claim like that would be accompanied by either a proof, a citation, or strenuous promises of a proof later in the text
Premise (i): Syntax is a productive, recursive and infinite system. Premise (ii): Rule-governed infinite systems are unacquirable. Conclusion: Therefore syntax is an unacquirable system. Since we have such a system, it follows that at least parts of syntax are innate. Trying not to go pedant mode and point out how this is not modus ponens. The real problem is that from what’s given, “innateness” doesn’t solve anything. If it’s really impossible to learn an infinite language in finite time, it’s also impossible to be born knowing an infinite language; our bodies too have finite extent. Obviously there’s an inductive process somewhere, and there’s no reason given to locate it in birth. It’s frustrating to see people try to use bad proofs when they have stronger arguments along other lines. There’s even a challenge problem defending this proof against the critique that a proof of the claim “a language is infinitely productive” (in particular there exist arbitrarily long valid sentences) is either a contradiction or tautology because the statement is either false or true. Don’t fucking waste my time with this shit!

Look at the letters: TeteTt and then an incomprehensible jumble What the jumble represents is that Firefox is rendering my font with 3 glyphs and rudimentary GPOS tables exactly as in the Metrics window on FontForge. The reason it looks like that is the rook letter T (onset t) is a full-width "automatic" type glyph, the letter e is a full-width "base glyph" type glyph (but with left and right bearings set to 0), and the letter t (coda t) is a zero-width "mark" type glyph. Furthermore there is a lookup table with a subtable of type base-to-mark called "vowel" that tells the font to hook a base anchor point of e up to a mark anchor point of t. I don't understand how that's supposed to work—it’s not working how I’d expect—but I know I can test it further in the metrics window

A page from 훈민정음 introducing the hangul alphabet. You can see the hangul letters are stiff and highly geometric. Because they would have to be written by hand with a brush, this was highly impractical and fairly ugly. Compare to the hanja (Chinese characters) used to explain the new letters, which had already enjoyed nearly a millennium to mature in style and usage. The person writing this page probably spent considerably longer writing a single stroke of the new hangul letters than on a whole hanja character This is not to discredit the foresight and planning that went into the design, by the way. The original designs were constructed over decades by King Sejong (and likely others) who was an expert in calligraphy and linguistics and fluent in multiple languages
