I know the "chips called TPUs" is the journalist way of introducing the term of art but I love how the whole sentence in context reads like "chips that Google have chosen to call TPUs" which is possibly closer to the truth...
I don't think this competes with / replaces TPU. If they're serving Gemini at Google scale (which I think they are) then the ROI on a 6-10x improvement in efficiency pays for another ASIC program. Video transcoding for YouTube is another example of this: hc33.hotchips.org/assets/progr...
