Gen X kids were subjected to the continual antics of the adorable dog Benji. A huge star, Benji was in multiple films of his own like FOR LOVE OF BENJI as well as Chevy Chase's ON HEAVENLY DOG. Then, in 1987, because it was the thing to do, Benji got a "grim and gritty" reboot. BENJI THE HUNTED!!!

Come for the trailer: youtu.be/ZMJ9Ite4cq8?... But stay for the scene of Benji tricking a wolf off a cliff:

I wasn't even born until 5 years after this, but I still have faint memories of watching it.

I always get Benji and Herbie mixed up

Jesus christ. Related, though, I had a book all about the making of Benji from the Scholastic Book Fair at school in grade 2. You'll never guess but there were actually 2 dogs...

This movie broke me when I saw it in theaters... I cried and cried and cried until I had no free water left in my body.

Benji was a little early to the Grimdark age, otherwise we'd have seen Benji running around with pouch-belts.
