A Garter snake pursuing a large toad. The toad is mid-jump. Despite the toad being several times larger than the snake’s head, the snake caught it, and over the course of maybe an hour, it swallowed the toad, whole. I watched it all, and photographed the process. It was not easy to watch, and I was sad for the toad, but it was not my place to intervene. What I did do was tell the toad that someone witnessed its end– that its life had mattered (I say something simliar when I drive past any animal killed by a vehicle). I hope my respect for this part of nature, and the natural life cycle of predator and prey resonated somewhere in the universe. I don’t believe in any gods, but if there is something more out there, I hope that some force will witness my eventual end with the same solemnity and respect.

A male Black-throated Blue Warbler stopped for about .05 seconds right in front of me and I took this pic of it. The bird is midnight blue on his crown and back, and white on his underside. He has a black face and throat, and a white patch on his wing called a pocket handkerchief. The light wasn’t great but he had at least come out from the underbrush.
