There is a constant fight In being an older queer We've taken on battles Sometimes not in the right direction We've got so used to our fists up Fighting to be seen To be included To be considered We fear putting them down As that hasn't gone so well in the past We've started and restarted so many times Backtracked and reset We've changed and adapted To spaces we've been given Taken space we weren't given Forged alliances that worked To get space Only to find more limits on us Because others got what they wanted And left the battle To us To continue This toll wearies us I can't be the only lucky one Who gets enough help and time To recover I want to grow old surrounded by my queer peers In retirement as the glittery cockroaches we are Celebrated and cheering on the youth coming through Not grow old remembering them
