According to Turchin and Jack Goldstone, periods of political instability have throughout human history been due to the purely self-interested behavior of the elite.[10] When the economy faced an expansion in the workforce, exerting a downward pressure on wages, the elite generally kept much of the wealth generated to themselves, resisting taxation and income redistribution. In the face of intensifying competition, they also sought to restrict upward mobility to preserve their power and status for their descendants.[11] These actions exacerbated inequality, a key driver of sociopolitical turbulence[11] due to the proneness of the relatively well-off to radicalism.[12] In the twenty-first-century Western countries, the popularity of progressive political beliefs among university graduates, for instance, may be due to widespread underemployment rather than from exposure to progressive ideas or experiences during their studies.[13][14] Stagnant wages and housing unaffordability make young professionals more likely to view the status quo as a zero-sum rather than a positive-sum game.[15]

Holding the Line: An Update on the Fight for Trans Rights and Accountability in Ohio ​Over the last couple of weeks, our community has taken some incredibly painful hits from people who are supposed to be our allies. Hearing a statewide candidate validate anti-trans narratives and write off our rights as "settled law" is a flat-out betrayal. Let’s be entirely clear: absolutely no boys are playing in girls' sports. Trans girls are girls, trans boys are boys, and transphobia and misgendering must be condemned, regardless of which political party it comes from. The anger out there right now is completely justified. ​A lot of you have reached out asking why I haven’t made a loud public statement yet, especially given my role with the Pride Caucus. I want to be very clear: the public quiet right now is not compliance. It’s strategy. ​Behind the scenes, the work hasn’t stopped for a single day. I, along with many other advocates, have been on the phone constantly with state party leadership, coordinating with allied organizations, and pushing back hard. We are forcing these conversations to happen, and we are not going to let this campaign run out the clock or sweep this under the rug hoping we just forget about it. ​The harm was done in public, and I believe that requires a public resolution. I take it that fascist passions can take many forms, but certainly one form is the desire to strip people of their rights – their rights of citizenship, rights of belonging to a particular country, rights of self-determination. If we have the expulsion of migrants with the claim that they do not belong to a particular nation state, if we have the stripping of rights of trans people to determine their own sex, if we have the rights of women to self-determination, including bodily autonomy, taken away, then we are seeing a series of rights-stripping activities not all of which are eliminationist but some of which I think may well be. In Florida, we have heard pundits say that trans people ‘should be wiped from the face of the earth’. Among the right-wing evangelicals and Catholics in Brazil, we hear that gender is a devil that ‘must be driven from the land’.

The body of the post contains five paragraphs of text, which read as follows: "My co-authors and I just published a study on menstrual side effects in women taking GLP-1 medications in *Obstetrics & Gynecology*, the official journal of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and is considered the most prestigious peer-reviewed publication in women's health, which means this went through rigorous independent peer review before it saw the light of day. I wanted to share it here because communities such as this have long spoken about these menstrual irregularities. Part of what motivated this work was a study published earlier this year that used AI to analyze posts and comments across multiple Reddit communities about semaglutide and tirzepatide. Out of everything users were reporting, menstrual complaints stood out, making up 3.8% of all adverse event mentions, which is a striking proportion when you consider how many different side effects people were discussing. That kind of patient-generated signal is hard to ignore, and it pushed us to look at whether the same pattern showed up in formal regulatory data. We analyzed over 14 million FDA adverse event reports, restricted to women aged 12–55, and looked at whether menstrual complaints were being reported at higher-than-expected rates for semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), and liraglutide (Saxenda, Victoza). Semaglutide had the strongest signal by far, heavier periods, spotting between periods, heavier clotting, fewer periods overall, and possible disruption of ovulation. Tirzepatide showed signals for spotting and clotting. Liraglutide did not demonstrate a signal for any menstrual event. One finding we think is important: missed periods, painful periods, and irreg…
