Around this same time, a utility company recruiting at my law school was asking female students about their relationship status & reproductive plans. 1st & 2nd students were too dumbfounded to respond, but warned #3, who told him such questions were illegal. 1/

I don’t see how you can ask someone if they’ve been “culturally deprived” without it being pretty intentional discrimination.
I looked up the crusty old guy who asked her the questions and he was, by my rough calculations, all of, uh, 38 at the time.

During two separate firm callback interviews I was asked about my wife’s ethnicity and my religious beliefs. One of the firms apologized profusely (via phone call from the managing partner) when I called them out on it. The other…didn’t care.
Honestly quite surprising that she was able to achieve success in the legal industry after doing this publicly, instead of being shunned as a “troublemaker”
