I know retouching has been around for ever BUT I really feel like we need laws for things like adverts for ACTUAL FOOD being real.

I thought there was a law? The thing you're advertising has to be real in the advert. For instance, if you're selling ice cream, then it has to be real, but if you're selling the sauce on top, then the ice cream can be potato. Food staging is an art form because of this. That definitely looks dodgy.
also any food stylist would gouge out their eyes before putting this weak shit in a photo. Unappetizing slop.
They had an art worker job going not to long ago that - surprise surprise - that required experience with AI programs

Ok, so with a little more digging, it looks like the original image WAS a photo (retouched IMO) but they ran it through AI to remove a knife, extend the bg, add in a tea-towel & spatula & generally slopify all the detail
Also, the scene scale doesn't make sense. Given that they're mini burgers, that spatula must be TINY. Especially compared to the toaster in the bg.

Yes, agree definitely A.I... but food photography has historically very, very rarely ever used actual real food. Washing up liquid, expanding foam, gallons of KY jelly, all used instead of anything you can eat.
