There is a common misconception that taking testosterone will make you an angrier person. While everyone responds differently to hormones, painting T as the universal “rage hormone” is factually inaccurate*. That myth is based largely on decades of confirmation bias layered into studies on the subject, as well as how cis men and male animals respond to T levels above their bodies’ normal healthy range – not on trans men using HRT to stay within a normal male range. Having hormonal imbalances will make anyone emotionally volatile. But properly administered HRT doesn’t create an imbalance, it shifts a body’s dominant sex hormone from one to the other. What is likely to happen is a period of adjustment that can cause temporary mood swings, and possibly (though not necessarily) an increase in risk-taking and social approval-seeking behavior, much like cis male puberty. My experience was much closer to a stereotypical teenage boy’s than a stereotypical “roid rager.” In fact, although I find myself more restless at times, on the whole I’m vastly calmer and more centered on HRT than I ever was with a monthly estrogen cycle, because T is the hormone that’s right for me. This isn’t to say no one experiences negative emotional outcomes; all bodies are different, and your experiences may differ. But testosterone HRT is common because for many of us, it works; don’t be scared off by T’s bad reputation.
