There's a dichotomy being presented here where you have to either choose a "style guide" or a programming language feature in order to avoid bugs. The sleight of hand misdirects the reader away from the main way bugs are eliminated: by dedicating engineering resources to it. You're not giving TigerBeetle nearly enough credit. Quite simply they put in the time to find and eliminate the bugs, they make an effort to maintain a healthy relationship with ZSF, and Bun did not do that.

The RJE process permits the returning of output to PWB instead of having it printed. The "big file scanner", bfs, is used to scan large files. The authors have used this to some advantage. We have a bfs script that searches PL/I compiler output for the significant diagnostics, linkage editor complaints, and the printout from the actual run. When the project goes into "panic mode," this is very useful for first compiles and test case drivers. We also use it on a casual basis during the normal work day. Being able to look at twenty lines of significant diagnostics rather than twenty pages of output is convenient and we still can go back for details.

I used to idolize Bryan Cantrill (per the name) but I have been greatly disappointed by the fact that he has "fallen for the crabs" as you say. I wish I could change this handle but unfortunately I paid a good sum of money for it. Thank you for bringing attention to this. @JodyBruchon It's OK. Bryan is a Sun legend. There is a lot of history to idolize. Don't regret it. I used to suck and now I don't. Bryan used to rock and now he don't. We all grow differently.
On the one hand, Java frees you up from many mundane and error-prone details of C++ coding. No more bounds errors, no more core dumps. Exceptions thrown point you to the exact line of code that erred, and are right 99% of the time. Objects print themselves intelligently on demand. Etc., etc. On the other hand, in addition to being a language, a virtual machine, a huge set of class libraries, a security model, and a portable bytecode format, Java is a religion. So you can't trust anyone who loves it too much. It's a tricky business to hire good Java programmers. But Java really has been a big step forward for software engineering in general. Going from C++ to Java isn't just changing syntax. It's a shocking paradigm shift that takes a while to sink in. It's like suddenly getting your own Executive Assistant. You know how VPs always seem to have all this time to be in meetings, and know how the company's running, and write cool documents, and stuff like that? VPs tend to forget that they're actually TWO full-time people: their self and their EA. Having an EA frees you up to think about the problems you need to solve; not having one forces you to spend half your time on mundane tasks. Switching to Java turns you into two programmers — one taking care of all this stuff that you no longer have to think much about, and another one focused on the problem domain. It's a staggering difference, and one you can get used to in a real hurry.

He tried to imagine himself the way he had been in Battle School, strapping on cut-down flash-suit pieces that never fit him right. He always looked like somebody's pet monkey dressed up as a human for the joke of it. Like a toddler who got clothes out of his big brother's dresser. The man in front of him, that's what Bean wanted to be when he grew up. But try as he might, he could never imagine actually being that big. No, not even being full size. He would always be looking up at the world. He might be male, he might be human, or at least humanesque, but he would never be manlu. No one would ever look at him and say, Now, *that's a man.* Then again, this soldier had never given orders that changed the course of history. Looking great in uniform wasn't the only way to earn your place in the world.

#3. All Star Superman Written by Grant Morrison, illustrated by Frank Quitely Superman is tough to write for. He's just too strong and too tough to write good plots around — those big muscles tend to break down any nuanced or believable plot-mechanics, and he's too morally rigid to be interesting or relatable. But writer Morrison seems to get what's fun about Superman: He's ridiculously powerful, and therefore he just sees and does and has lots of incredibly cool, totally bizarre stuff. All Star Superman isn't bound by DC-universe continuity, so the sky isn't even close to the limit: time machines, nanonauts, sun-eaters, a super-dense sphere of black kryptonite from the Underverse, it's all good.
