I lost interest after you made it about yourself

Jake Peterson · May 19

So basically what I’m getting is that CA gubernatorial candidates don’t know how to react to interviewers that get contentious out of the blue. Between Steyer and Porter though I’ll give it that Steyer handled it better if a bit awkwardly by trying to flex how he knows female editors.

This is yet another example of how blisteringly isolated and echo-chamber the elite class of mass media, politicians, *&* billionaires are. The people "reporting" are part of this brainmushed crew of people living in a manufactured hyperreality. Wired had zero idea this looks weird and bad. None.

Matcha (He/Him) ☭🇵🇸 · May 19

who enjoys watching two rich assholes talk to each other

Sean · May 20

This was really weird.

Professionally Certified Woolgatherer · May 19

I was prepared to be sympathetic to a snubbed professional woman, but having actually watched this I'm disinclined even to empathy. Is there some weird history here, what the fuck?

Chris Martin · May 19

He has hundreds of interviews a year so he’s not likely to remember if he’s talking to a writer or editor or editor in chief.

Don Bones · May 19

Nothing in this interaction warranted "Bluesky, enjoy" lol

@zlorpl.bsky.social · May 19

Well this is obnoxious

Thanks, I Hate It · May 19

..what's with the odd cuts in this?

Thanks, I Hate It · May 19

Weird.

Jaxs05 · May 20

It's the fact that he was incredulous when informed. He should be better prepared.

Meatwad Ron: Summer of Ron · May 19

This is kinda weird on your part, no? I’m no expert but I would assume an Editor or Editor in Chief “works” at that publication

John Doe 🍁 · May 20

Interviewing a billionaire and having yourself come off as the smug asshole and the billionaire as the relatable normal person is truly incredible work, great job

Jor Jar Jar Martin · May 19

Weird that only one person comes off like a narcissist here and it's not the billionaire

DNC polling expert 🔻 · May 19

Being the editor for wired magazine still means you work for wired magazine. Not sure how this is some epic own.

@tiobe.bsky.social · May 26

I’ve been sitting with this one for a while. Is it really disqualifying for a candidate to not remember an interviewer‘s name/job title? Is that on par with dehumanizing trans/unhoused community members (newsom)? or taking fossil fuel $ (becerra)? or is it merely annoying and an ego hit?

Dissociation Waffle · May 19

Oh, we enjoyed it. Just not for the reason you thought we would.

Muffin · May 19

This is a really badly done interview

@ewigeliberal.bsky.social · May 19

The video link, which is in the article you're linking does not work: What do you know about the bona fides of an interviewee, if you can't even properly code/script the links in your articles? firefox, opera, doesn't load, same error when loading www.wired.com/category/video

@ewigeliberal.bsky.social · May 19

On second 🤔, I will wait until the video is available on: www.youtube.com/wired And if it is not available as the interview with Alex Bores is currently, i.e. in a timely fashion, we'll know that Katie Drummond has an agenda here.

Hunter the Beerkid · May 19

Trying to frame this interaction as some kind of misogynistic dig at the EIC is reckless and, frankly, ridiculous. If he’d expressed some kind of shock that a woman could hold that title, or insinuated that she was unqualified on the basis of her gender, then go ahead. But this? This is lame.

the_lion_of_anacostia 🦁 · May 19

Breaking: people who run magazines also work there. Did Katrina Heron “work” at WIRED? Just trying to understand the editorial standards behind this little tantrum. Who pissed in Kate’s Cheerios?

Deep State Nepo Baby · May 19

This interview was really weird to read. The way the dialogue was formatted and edited was very clearly designed to paint Steyer in a bad light, but the stuff he was actually quoted as saying was very reasonable.

I do enjoy. I enjoy Tom Steyer not giving a fuck who you are like any regular person would in an interview that's supposed to be about them. I feel more confident in voting for him since he wrinkled the feathers of some tech dweeb going *ahem* pointing at their nametag. Thanks!

Eddie Hill · May 19

Wired has been killing it lately. But this isn't one of those times. Rare outlier

Benwest500 · May 19

Neither party in this interview looks good.

@aimeeeg.bsky.social · May 19

Ha. Par for the course.

former dog · May 19

Steyer comes across terribly, but why is the most important thing in an interview of a major candidate for Governor that he didn't know the job title of the interviewer? Seems very self-centered.

@thepowerbroker.bsky.social · May 20

This is so lazy and unprofessional to make the *entire* takeaway from the interview I think y'all have earned my unsub

Royal Chant · May 19

Grand Theft Bottom · May 19

I was kinda with you when I read this exchange written out, but the video isn't exactly conveying what you think it is.

WE TRIED TO WARN YOU · May 19

Steyer mis-names Drummond - a capital offense in the view of many hereabouts - and (poorly prepped for this one of many job interviews) presumptively devalues her executive role in a subculture rampant with misogyny. Shots fired, shots returned, no call-back.

@duanebw.bsky.social · May 20

I was disappointed at Steyer's lame "control, alt, delete" answers 1. Delete: LNG - LNG is not worse than coal 2. Control: CRYPTO - should have been his "Delete" choice. Crypto is a worthless speculation vehicle only useful for financial crimes 3. Alt[er]: AI REGULATIONS - good answer

@grebnelhok.bsky.social · May 19

I’m glad that Tom Steyer isn’t wasting mental real estate on the org charts for random magazines. Unlike some commenters here, I don’t think either of them comes off THAT badly in this exchange. But if you make me pick which of them seems more likable and normal, it’s gotta be Steyer.

Don Coriolis · May 21

The more i watch this the more insufferable this lady seems. Like, its clear she has an agenda and has already determined that this interview will serve to reinforce and telegraph her beliefs. People like this take a lot away from legitimate concerns of misogyny. Fucking gross and dumb

Don Coriolis · May 19

Wow you're so condescending...and so proud of it! Great job, we all learned a lot about tom from this interview

Lashanakit (she / her) 🏳️‍🌈 🐧 · May 20

Lashanakit (she / her) 🏳️‍🌈 🐧 · May 20

Why is this the part of the interview you clipped to promote it? Was it specifically for engagement purposes or did you actually think this was a good look for you?

Formerly Saysceej · May 19

When Reese Witherspoon was a huge star people thought it looked bad for her to pull a “do you know who I am?” Not sure why you think it makes your EiC - sorry I mean Global Editorial Director - look good to do the same thing.

Dan · May 19

What was the part we’re suppose to enjoy? Cause I’m sorry but ma’am you managed to make the billionaire look reasonable.

Kat: I run this bitch, you fool.

Kevidently · May 19

Wired, I think you're generally a terrific light in the darkness of now, but the fact that you've chosen to highlight the smugness of a writer at your magazine instead of the many issues of billionaire politicians is unseemly. This isn't why we come to you. It makes us trust you less.

Barter Loch Monster · May 19

This is what two decades of being wined, dined, and flattered by the Tech Barons does to your brain. Their day-to-day is having some executive assistant or PR rep reach out already knowing all their information, addicting them to flattery and access. It’s withdrawal pangs when someone doesn’t.

J. Puma · May 19

Nolan Zugernat · May 19

Obviously candidates should know the biographies of every single person who interviews them, especially Katie Drummond who is Very Important.

James Endicott · May 19

The Global Editorial Director embarrassed herself in an interview that she thought was gotcha. It could be ambiguously interpreted in text but now she's ordering one of her subordinates post the video that makes her look worse on the company account. Journalist egos are something else.

T · May 19

I don’t know how you can interview a billionaire and come out of it looking like the more insufferable one, but we got a good example of it today.

Upzone the coastal elites · May 19

I think the important thing about the interview is there's no discussion on the housing shortage, and his excellent housing policy is Steyer's biggest selling point.

I stopped reading Wired 30 years ago because the articles were about the writer and the writer's processes. I don't need to know that the car rental agent was unhelpful, or that it took six calls to secure an interview. I'd hoped that the mag had outgrown its self centeredness, but I guess not.
