The conclusion I've (in)correctly drawn from this is that we should have started the Russian bore hole at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

Everyone should know about the USGS hole in top of the Mammoth Mountain volcano in California. They collected core samples from almost 3000m below the surface! They also showed that temperatures were stable at great depth due to water infiltration. One of the deepest cores in the world at the time!

If you measure a hole's depth by how far the bottom is beneath the surface then if you drill a hole to 10 metres beneath the other side of the planet then you have spent trillions drilling a 10 metre deep hole.

What's the deepest place that regular humans can get to? The Gällivare mine tour in Sweden goes down 1000 metres to around 600m below sea level, well below Dead Sea level.

This is fab. The only UK entry is a thing I had never heard of and was fascinating ( see www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/places/utili... ). We also have the second-deepest mine in Europe at 1400m ( www.icl-uk.uk/how-deep-is-... ) but it is a long way down the world list.
